Matter 1.6 focuses on deployment and shared control
NFC commissioning, Joint Fabric, and more contextual device behavior aim at the awkward parts of real installations—not another wave of device categories.
Why this deserves attention
Matter 1.6, released June 17, 2026, concentrates on how devices are installed and co-managed. Bidirectional NFC commissioning can provision some devices before they are powered, which is unusually relevant to in-wall switches, ceiling fixtures, and larger staged installations.
Joint Fabric gives authorized controllers a shared Matter network rather than copying access across several separate fabrics. The specification also adds more standardized capability, limit, state, and safety information. None of this means products or Home Assistant integrations support the features immediately; the useful watch is implementation, certification, and behavior in mixed ecosystems.
What to watch
The headline is the start of the question.
01
Which controllers implement Matter 1.6 rather than merely accepting older devices
02
Whether NFC commissioning appears in installed devices and electrician workflows
03
How Joint Fabric ownership, removal, and recovery behave in practice
04
Whether new capability and safety data reach Home Assistant cleanly
