GFThe Grown-Ass Field Guide

Drones / Field Notes

The drone is the front end of a record

Jobsite flights become valuable when repeatable capture turns into an organized, comparable, and defensible project record.

Field Note

Aerial footage is easy to admire and surprisingly easy to lose inside unnamed folders. The business value begins when every mission has a purpose, repeatable capture plan, known accuracy, consistent storage path, and a person who knows what decision the output supports.

Progress documentation needs comparable views and dates. Quantity work needs appropriate overlap, positioning, processing, and validation. Inspection needs enough detail and context to show where the observation belongs. Each is a different deliverable even if the same aircraft can collect all three.

Build the information chain before buying around headline range or sensor size: authorization, mission, capture, transfer, processing, quality check, retention, access, and delivery. The best platform is the one the team can operate safely and repeatably without turning each flight into a custom software project.

Useful takeaways

The short version.

  1. 01

Define the decision or record before the flight plan

  2. 02

Standardize routes, naming, storage, and comparison views

  3. 03

Match claimed accuracy to validation evidence

  4. 04

    Evaluate the complete field-to-deliverable workflow
